Yes. All therapy sessions are private and confidential. Our psychotherapists adhere to strict ethical and legal standards regarding client confidentiality. In general, the difference is in the training received. For example, counsellors can receive training that ranges from a 6 months course to 2 or more years of tertiary training. Counsellors are typically equipped to conduct counselling, and in some cases, psychotherapy.
Counselling tends to be more short-term, less in-depth, and more supportive. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is a bona fide treatment for mental health disorders. It can be longer-term and explores issues in a more in-depth manner.
It is important to note that clinical psychologists, as a result of their rigorous training (minimum of 4 years of undergraduate + 2 years of postgraduate study to obtain at least a Masters), are equipped to conduct both counselling and psychotherapy, compared to counsellors. Clinical psychologists are also trained to diagnose mental health disorders. Psychotherapists have also received specialised in-depth post-graduate training in specific psychotherapists.
Finding the right therapist and establishing good rapport is a collaborative process that requires commitment and consistency in attending sessions. It is okay to explore different therapists until you find one with whom you feel comfortable and supported. This means that it is also okay to request a change in therapist if you don’t feel that the fit is right after a few sessions. After all, the therapeutic relationship (i.e., the relationship between client and therapist) is a crucial factor in successful therapy outcomes.
It would be helpful if you could identify your needs and clarify the reasons for seeking therapy. If you are unsure, feel free to speak to one of our staff who will be happy to offer some guidance or therapist recommendations based on your concerns.
